Miss Dunaway's Summary
For the week of November 27, 2006
First Grade
The First Graders have been working on beginning r blends (fr,
cr, br etc.) in VoWac. We had three first graders get a 100% on
their Trial Test: Lily, Bryce, and Luke Great Job! In Science we
have started a chapter on life cycles. We have learned the life
cycle of a chicken and a frog. In English we are practicing writing
sentences. In Math, we have been working with fact families. On our
math test we had four 100%! Way to go: Luke, Bryce, Emily, Faith!
In Centers, we have been playing I Spy with our word wall words,
making colorful links for our Christmas tree, and making our own
Christmas tree out of shapes. Starting Monday, the first graders
will be doing timed-math-addition facts every morning. There will
be 25 problems. The students will be given a maximum of 3 minutes
to complete the problems. The students will start with adding 0's
and progress to adding 1's and so on, if they do not make any
errors. Practicing with flash cards will help the students
succeed.
Second Grade
This week we had all our second graders get an A on their Trial
Test! We had seven 100% on the Trial Test. Super job to: Corrina,
Kristin, Ally, Karissa, Skylar, Sarah, and Courtney. In Math we
have started a new chapter on geometry! We have started talking
about shapes, sides, angles, and vertices. Along with flips, slides
and turns. In English, we have been working with past and present.
In Science we have started a new chapter on plants and animals
living together. We have been learning about Food Chains and Food
Webs. I am excited to see the bird nests completed! In VoWac we
have been working with soft and hard c & g. The students are
needing to know the sounds of ca, ce, ci, co, cu, cy and ga, ge,
gi, go, gu, gy.
Important Class News
** Luke was our Star of the Week. He brought some neat
things!
** Bryce will be our new Star of the Week! We are excited to see
what he has to say about himself.
**Thanks to all of you parents who have been helping your child
with Book-It. The December papers have been sent out. The goals are
bumped up 5 minutes a day for second grade and 3 minutes a day for
first grade: second graders have a reading goal of 75 minutes/week
or 15 minutes/day, first graders have a reading goal of 40
minutes/week or 8 minutes/day. I am expecting this reading time to
be the students reading to a parent or sibling. I would encourage
parents to read to their students each night, as well. The children
will learn most, by example. :) Please turn in the November reading
logs ASAP!
** Our class will be donating to the Salvation Army. We are
learning about giving to others who are less fortunate. Please help
your student collect canned/boxed foods to put under our classroom
tree.
**This Christmas within class we are going to be talking about
Christmas Family Traditions. I will be asking students to bring
something to share with the class that explains a family tradition
of theirs. Whether it be an object, food, movie, story etc. We will
be sharing our items sometime in the week before Christmas.
** We have had Haley and Amber lose teeth within the past couple
weeks.
Miss Dunaway I hope you had a great Thanksgiving!!
