This semester the high school students were able to experience
the game of lacrosse for the first time. Students first
learned some of the rules and strategy by watching the 2007 Men's
NCAA lacrosse championship. They picked up on things such as
length of the game, how long the playing field was, how many
players there are on each time, and many others. They then
practiced certain skills essential to playing the game
successfully. Once they were able to pass, catch, and shoot
on goal, students were able to play the game. They quickly
found out that the game is a lot harder to play than it looks on
television. They also found out how tiring the game can be.
We were never able to get outside and play the game on what
would have been close to a regulation sized field, but just playing
in the gym wore them down.
In all, I think the students enjoyed the game and got the
experience that they probably wouldn't have ever got had we not
played lacrosse in p.e. class.
The 2008 Men's Lacrosse championship is played in late May and
is usually televised on ESPN. If you have never seen the game
played before, I encourage you to watch. It is an interesting
and exciting game to watch.
Have a great summer.
