Poetry of Place
Rural Poetry Contest

by Cecilia Neiman
May 16, 2008

Prague has poets and didn't know it! I'm proud to announce that there are a few published poets running around amongst us. If you look at the Nebraska Department of Education website or Nebraska Writing Project website (affiliated with the University of Nebraska) you will find the Poet of Place, rural Nebraska poetry contest. I worked with the 7th-12th grades on poetry units over the course of 2 weeks to a month depending on the class. I had the students all write poems and submit them to this poetry contest. Three of my students were selected to represent Nebraska as poet student of place sponsored by the Nebraska Writing Project and the Nebraska Humanities Council. Only 12 students were chosen to represent Nebraska across the state from all school class sizes. Prague had the most students chosen from one school. To celebrate, the students read their poems at the State Capitol Building in Lincoln, NE on May 2. The ceremony honored student writers and Nebraska Poet Twyla Hansen who read some of her poetry. Later, these students' poetry will be sponsored by the Nebraska Department of Education for display in the State Office building, and then their poetry will appear on the website of the Nebraska Writing Project. The students from Prague Public School that won were Kelsey Maris-12th grade, Nathan Sousek-10th grade, and Sadie VanNorman-9th grade. They did a wonderful job. Congratulations to these students and all students who participated in this contest and for a job well done. Cecilia Neiman, Language Arts
