Read awhile....
5th and 6th Read Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls
by Kristyn Thomas
May 21, 2009
The last 20 days of school for reading class the 5th and 6th Grade class have been reading a chapter a day in Where the Red Fern Grows. We finished the book on Wednesday, May 20th and followed with a comparison of the book and the movie.
Dylan TePoel was asked, what the most interesting part of the story was and he answered:
"When Old Dan was chasing a coon and chased him into a muskrat whole underneath the bank of the river and he was stuck there until Billy dug him out."
This story was great for the students to read because it was filled with excitement of a boy in the past at or around their own age and how he had to work hard for what he wanted even with sorrow at the end.
The students enjoyed the book and it was great to read with them because over the year they have become more fluent and expressive readers. These students will be in my mind and heart always.
