Wow, did it grow!

Science Experiment

by Tanya Brabec

September 24, 2009

Throughout the beginning of September we were finishing our science experiment... The students took good care in planting their grass seed in their clear cup, keeping the cup in the sun, and watering it every day. Within the first two days, we were seeing roots starting to form. Within 5 days, we had our first blades of grass poking through the dirt. Within 10 days, everyone had a great cup of green grass. Then it was time to 'begin' our experiment! I then told the students that some of them would put their grass in a cupboard, and some of them would not water their grass, and some of them would get to keep their cup in the sun and keep watering them. You would have thought the cups of grass were little puppies the way the students were soooo protective over them. They sure didn't want to 'kill' their grass!! After a few days, when they started to see the changes in the grass without water or without sun, they were a little more interested to see whose grass would die first! All in all, we found the cups of grass without water were dying before the cups without sun. We also had one cup of seeds with water, no soil... Mrs. Brabec and a good handful of students were very surprised when the grass started to grow without the soil!! All in all, the experiment went well and we learned a lot. Some of the students have reported their grass is still alive and kicking! While others, have reported no life to be seen!
