This year as a part of school improvement, the elementary teachers, the special education teacher, and the Title I teacher had training in DIBELS. The DIBELS assessment is a test that teachers can give to all students K-6th grade to find the areas that are the students' strengths and weaknesses. Students are tested at the beginning, middle, and end of the year and teachers keep track of their progress throughout the year.
Depending upon the grade level, students are tested in the following areas: initial sound fluency, letter naming fluency, phoneme segmentation fluency, nonsense word fluency, word use fluency, oral reading fluency, and retell fluency. These tests help teachers to identify which areas to focus their teaching on. The teachers have seen some major improvements in students' scores with using the DIBELS assessments.
